A Life of Adventure and Passion

Dick Miller’s life was a testament to his adventurous spirit and passion for flyfishing. Born in 1948, Miller grew up in a family that valued the outdoors and encouraged his love for fishing. As a young boy, he spent countless hours on the water, learning the basics of fishing from his father. This early exposure to the sport laid the foundation for Miller’s future success.

The Early Years

Miller’s introduction to flyfishing was a gradual one. He began by learning the basics of freshwater fishing, but soon became fascinated with the challenge of catching saltwater fish.

β€œHis largest kingfish was 22kg, and he released every kingfish he caught. He was very concerned about the decreasing numbers in the harbour.” Conservation passion Marquand is survived by his five children. On Facebook, Marquand’s son Shane Marquand described his father as a man β€œseldom without a smile”. β€œI grew up idolising this man and stuck to him as if I was his shadow,” he wrote. β€œHe was very passionate regarding the conservation of New Zealand nature; from the mountains down the streams to the seas.” Marquand had been diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2020. More recently, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, but it was a comfort to Miller that he spent the day fishing before passing so suddenly.

He was a kind and generous person who always put others before himself. He was a devoted husband and father, and his family was his greatest joy. He loved his wife and children dearly and would do anything to protect and care for them.
