🪢 Fishing Line Calculator
Pick your target species and spool dimensions to get a recommended line strength and an estimate of how much line your reel will hold.
🎣 Spool Up Right
What is a Fishing Line Calculator?
A fishing line calculator takes the guesswork out of spooling a reel. It pairs a recommended pound-test to your target species and estimates the line capacity of your spool, so you buy the right strength and the right amount the first time.
Match the suggested line to your rod and reel ratings and the cover you fish, then use the capacity estimate to plan backing and avoid over- or under-filling the spool.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What pound-test line should I use?
The right line strength depends on the fish you're chasing and the cover you fish. Panfish and trout call for light 4–6 lb line, bass and walleye sit in the middle, and pike, catfish, and offshore saltwater species need heavy line. This calculator suggests a sensible starting pound-test for each target species, which you can adjust for clear water or heavy cover.
How is spool capacity estimated?
The tool models the usable space on your spool — its width and the volume between the arbor and the flange lip — and divides it by the cross-section of your line, converting the result to yards. Enter the spool diameter, spool width, and line diameter, and it returns an approximate yardage so you know roughly how much line to buy.
Why does my real spool capacity differ from the estimate?
Capacity is affected by the type of line, how tightly it's wound, whether you add backing, and where you stop filling relative to the spool lip. Braid packs more line on than mono of the same rated strength. Treat the number as a ballpark and leave a small gap below the lip to avoid wind knots.
Should I match line to my rod and reel?
Yes. Reels and rods list a recommended line range; staying within it protects your gear and improves casting and drag performance. Use the recommended pound-test here as a guide, then confirm it falls within your rod and reel ratings before spooling up.
