Kerala : End trawling off coast , say traditional fishermen – ICSF

Narayanan, a renowned marine biologist. The Kerala government has been working on a comprehensive plan to regulate and control the trawling operations in the coastal waters of the state. The plan includes a ban on trawling in certain areas, a reduction in the number of trawlers, and the implementation of fishing quotas.

They claimed that the destructive fishing method was causing significant damage to the marine ecosystem. Pelagic trawling is a type of fishing that uses large nets to catch fish and other marine life in the open ocean. It is a highly efficient method, but it can also be very destructive to the marine ecosystem. The destructive nature of pelagic trawling stems from its indiscriminate nature. It drags large nets through the water, catching everything in its path, including fish, invertebrates, and even marine mammals. This indiscriminate approach can lead to bycatch, where non-target species are caught and killed.
