Bassmaster Open Brings Economic and Social Benefits to Waddington, New York

The Bassmaster Open, a three-day fishing tournament, has descended upon Waddington, New York, bringing with it a multitude of benefits for the local community.

The Anglers

A total of 145 anglers participated in the tournament on Thursday morning, with the final stop in their division being the Bassmaster Open. Throughout the series, participants have been earning points based on their performance, with the top 50 securing a spot in the Bassmaster Elite Qualifiers. We had the opportunity to speak with Dylan Fogarty, who is currently in 48th place. Fogarty is a newcomer to the Bassmaster Open, having participated in his first tournament this year. His goal is to make it to the professional side of bass fishing, and he is eager to showcase his skills. “I have always been fascinated by bass fishing, and it has been a lifelong goal of mine to make it to the professional side of the sport. I am really looking forward to this tournament and hoping to make a good impression. I believe I have what it takes to compete at the Elite Series level,” Fogarty stated. The tournament is a significant event for the anglers, with the top 10 finishers competing in the championship on Saturday.

Economic Benefits

The Bassmaster tournament has a significant economic impact on the area. According to Bill Williams, store manager of Parkway Express IGA in Waddington, the tournament brings a substantial increase in business to the store. The proximity of the boat launch to the store results in a significant boost in gas sales. “We open the store an hour early to accommodate the anglers, and we make sure to have plenty of coffee and extra cashiers on hand to cater to their needs. We also stock up on ice, as anglers use it to keep the fish alive after it’s caught. Typically, we get a shipment of ice every 2 or 3 days, but during the tournament, we need to restock daily. We often receive 10 to 15 bags of ice per angler, which is a significant increase in demand,” Williams explained. The influx of people to the area also has a positive impact on local businesses, as highlighted by Waddington Mayor Mike Zagrobelny. “It’s exposure for our community, letting people know that we’re a great place to visit 12 months a year, but particularly in the summer. We’re proud to host this event, and it’s a great opportunity for us to showcase our town and its amenities,” Zagrobelny stated.

Community Support

The Bassmaster tournament brings together people from all over the country, including Tom Fogarty from Pennsylvania, who is watching his son Dylan fish in the tournament. Fogarty’s support for his son’s endeavors is heartwarming, as he believes in Dylan’s abilities. “I asked my son if he thought he had what it took to make it to the professional side of bass fishing, and he said he didn’t. I said, ‘I think you do.’ I’m proud of him for pursuing his dreams, and I’m excited to see him compete in this tournament,” Fogarty said. The influx of people to the area can only benefit the community, as highlighted by Bill Williams. “We’re big with the community as is, but this helps our community, not just our business, but all businesses in Waddington. We’re proud to host this event, and we’re grateful for the exposure it brings to our town and its residents,” Williams said.

Conclusion

The Bassmaster Open is a significant event for the community of Waddington, New York, bringing economic and social benefits to the area.
